Choquequirao is a fascinating archaeological site located in the Cusco region of Peru. It is often compared to Machu Picchu due to its historical significance and natural beauty. Our adventure will begin early with pickup in Cusco en route to our destination, Capuliyoc, in a comfortable tourist vehicle. Accompanied by muleteers and their loyal animals, we will explore the beautiful landscape as we ascend to the Capuliyoc Pass, where we will have the luxury of seeing impressive views of the Apurimac River canyon and the chance to see condors in flight. We will begin with a light four-hour hike to reach Chiquisca, where our camp is located. If the weather is good, we will be able to see the Choquequirao archaeological complex in the distance. This first day will mark the beginning of our adventure surrounded by beautiful nature.Night of camping in Chiquisca.
After breakfast in Chiquisca, we’ll begin the short 30-minute hike to Rosalina Beach. We’ll cross the Apurímac River and ascend to Santa Rosa for two hours, taking advantage of the morning coolness. In Santa Rosa, we’ll rest for 30 minutes before continuing to Marampata, a two-and-a-half-hour hike. At 2,850 meters (9,500 feet), we’ll have lunch overlooking Choquequirao, 3,103 meters (10,630 feet) above sea level. We’ll then hike for another two hours to our campsite, just 20 minutes from the Choquequirao Archaeological Site.Night of camping.
In the morning, we will explore the impressive Choquequirao Archaeological Site, known as the “Sister Citadel of Machu Picchu,” built in the 15th century in the Apurimac River canyon. Guided by an expert, we will discover 30% of the archaeological complex, with the promise that Choquequirao will rival Machu Picchu in fascination. The day includes a hike back to Marampata and through the Apurimac Canyon, culminating at our campsite in Chiquisca, for an approximately 6-hour experience in warm weather and an overnight campsite. Night of camping in Chiquisca.
After breakfast, we’ll leave camp for a two- to three-hour climb to Chiquisca. We’ll then return to Capuliyoc, where we’ll enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll begin a two-hour return trip to Cachora, where our return transportation to Cusco awaits.
