SACRED VALLEY

Description

Named for being the main food supplier of the Inca empire, the Sacred Valley is located on the banks of the Urubamba River. This river was originally called Vilcanota, which comes from the Quechua word Wilcamayu or Sacred River. The Incas built archaeological centers along its banks that replicated the constellations they knew of the Andean sky, which contributes even more to the beauty of this enchanting valley.

Itinerary

Sacred Valley

We will begin our Sacred Valley of the Incas tour with a pickup at around 7:00 AM, embarking on a one-hour journey to explore the ancient archaeological site of Pisac. Here, you will learn about the intricate techniques the Incas used in their architecture. Afterward, we will visit the town of Pisac, known for its artisanal market, where you can find a variety of products such as paintings, keychains, handicrafts, and more.

Around noon, we will have lunch in the Urubamba Valley. After a brief rest, we will visit the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo, a strategic center and fortress built with meticulously carved stones. These stones were transported to the site and used for astronomical purposes. Our final stop will be the town of Chinchero, which was of great importance during the Inca era for its fertile terraced fields, where potatoes were primarily cultivated. Chinchero is also known for its renowned textiles, which preserve a variety of ancestral traditions.

The tour concludes around 6:30 PM back in Cusco, after you have enjoyed this unforgettable experience of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

1. What places are visited during the Sacred Valley full-day tour?

The Sacred Valley full-day tour usually includes visits to the archaeological sites of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, along with free time at the traditional markets of Pisac and the town of Urubamba, where lunch is typically served. Some agencies also add Chinchero to the return itinerary. These destinations combine Andean landscapes, Inca agricultural terraces, temples, mountains, and living traditions. The route allows travelers to learn about Inca history, culture, and architecture, observe local life, discover traditional textile techniques, and enjoy panoramic views of the valley. It is a complete tour that showcases the best of the Inca legacy in just one day.

Yes, to enter archaeological sites such as Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Chinchero, you must have either the Partial or General Tourist Ticket. This ticket is usually not included in the tour price, so it’s important to bring money to purchase it on the same day. The Partial Ticket covers only the Sacred Valley destinations, while the General Ticket allows access to more than 15 sites in Cusco over several days. Buying the ticket ensures official entry and supports the maintenance of the archaeological sites. If you already have the General Ticket, you won’t need to pay anything additional. Your guide will advise you on the best option depending on your itinerary.

The Sacred Valley tour is accessible for most visitors, as the walking within the archaeological sites is done at a moderate pace and the distances are not demanding. However, some sections include steep stairways, especially in Pisac and Ollantaytambo, so it is recommended to wear comfortable footwear and take your time. It is suitable for both older adults and children, as long as the group maintains an appropriate pace. Due to the altitude, it’s advisable to be at least minimally acclimated in Cusco before doing the tour. Overall, it is a cultural and scenic experience that is perfect for travelers of all ages.

Yes, the tour usually includes a visit to artisan workshops in Pisac or Chinchero, where you can watch demonstrations of traditional Andean weaving, the use of natural dyes, and ancestral techniques. These stops allow you to appreciate the work of local communities and, if you wish, purchase authentic handicrafts such as textiles, ceramics, or jewelry. Shopping is completely optional, but it is a meaningful way to directly support artisan families. Additionally, the Pisac market offers a wide variety of handmade products that showcase the region’s cultural richness. These visits enhance the experience and complement the archaeological portion of the tour.

The Sacred Valley has a milder climate than Cusco, with cold mornings, sunny midday hours, and variable afternoons. During the dry season (April to October), clear days are common, although nights can be quite cold. In the rainy season (November to March), mornings are often clear, with rain typically appearing in the afternoon. It is recommended to bring light clothing for the day, a windbreaker jacket, sunscreen, and a hat, as the high-altitude sun is strong. Carrying a compact rain poncho is also useful. This varied weather allows you to enjoy green landscapes and bright skies, enriching the overall experience of the tour.
