The tour to the Mountain of Seven Colors, also known as Vinicunca, in Cusco is an unforgettable experience. We will pick you up from your hotel at 4:00 AM, the ideal time to begin a two-hour drive south to the district of Cusipata-Paucarpata in the province of Quispicanchi, where we will stop for breakfast.
After a short rest, our next stop is just 10 minutes away at the first base control, the rural community of Tintinco and Paucarpata. From the base control, we will begin a 1-hour and 40-minute hike to Vinicunca (the Mountain of Seven Colors), one of the most beautiful in the Cusco region.
From the summit, you will enjoy an incredible view of a range of colors from green to red, giving the mountain its name, Mountain of Seven Colors. Faqs
1. What is the difficulty level of the hike to Rainbow Mountain?
The hike is considered moderate to challenging mainly due to the high altitude, rather than the technicality of the trail. Our team is fully prepared to guide you at your own pace, offering strategic breaks and constant assistance along the way. If needed, we can also help you arrange horse services with local handlers. As an agency, our goal is to ensure you reach the summit safely, enjoy the stunning views, and experience the journey without pressure, even if you don’t have much trekking experience.
2. Is it safe to do the tour if I’m not used to high altitude?
Your safety is our top priority. Rainbow Mountain is located at over 5,000 meters above sea level, so we recommend spending one or two days acclimatizing in Cusco beforehand. Our guides are trained in first aid and carry oxygen, a medical kit, and constant communication equipment. We walk at a calm, steady pace and monitor you throughout the hike. If you experience any discomfort, we act immediately. Our close support ensures you can enjoy the experience even if you’re not fully accustomed to the altitude.
3. What kind of weather can I expect during the tour?
The weather in Vinicunca is highly variable—it can be sunny, windy, or even bring occasional snowfall. As an agency, we monitor the weather conditions daily to provide you with updated information and make responsible decisions. We recommend dressing in layers and bringing a rain poncho. Even with changing conditions, the views are usually spectacular; and in case of extreme weather, we reschedule or offer safe alternatives. Our commitment is to ensure your safety without compromising the quality of your experience.
4. How long does the entire hike take?
The hike typically takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours each way, depending on your pace, the weather conditions, and the altitude. Our guides plan strategic breaks so you can rest, recover energy, and take photos. We don’t aim to rush you—our focus is ensuring you enjoy the journey calmly and comfortably. We also maintain constant communication with the group to adapt to each traveler’s needs. Our goal is for you to have a memorable, comfortable, and pressure-free experience.
