Choquequirao is a fascinating archaeological site located in the Cusco region of Peru. It is often compared to Machu Picchu due to its historical significance and natural beauty. If you’re interested in exploring the Andean landscapes and the jungle while visiting ancient Inca cities, trekking or hiking to Choquequirao is a unique experience in the Peruvian Andes that reveals ancient Inca constructions, mysteries, and llama-based art.

Itinerary

FIRST DAY: Cusco - Capuliyoc - Chiquisca

Our adventure will begin early with pickup in Cusco en route to our destination, Capuliyoc, in a comfortable tourist vehicle. Accompanied by muleteers and their loyal animals, we will explore the beautiful landscape as we ascend to the Capuliyoc Pass, where we will have the luxury of seeing impressive views of the Apurimac River canyon and the chance to see condors in flight. We will begin with a light four-hour hike to reach Chiquisca, where our camp is located. If the weather is good, we will be able to see the Choquequirao archaeological complex in the distance. This first day will mark the beginning of our adventure surrounded by beautiful nature.Night of camping in Chiquisca.

After breakfast in Chiquisca, we’ll begin the short 30-minute hike to Rosalina Beach. We’ll cross the Apurímac River and ascend to Santa Rosa for two hours, taking advantage of the morning coolness. In Santa Rosa, we’ll rest for 30 minutes before continuing to Marampata, a two-and-a-half-hour hike. At 2,850 meters (9,500 feet), we’ll have lunch overlooking Choquequirao, 3,103 meters (10,630 feet) above sea level. We’ll then hike for another two hours to our campsite, just 20 minutes from the Choquequirao Archaeological Site.Night of camping.

In the morning, we will explore the impressive Choquequirao Archaeological Site, known as the “Sister Citadel of Machu Picchu,” built in the 15th century in the Apurimac River canyon. Guided by an expert, we will discover 30% of the archaeological complex, with the promise that Choquequirao will rival Machu Picchu in fascination. The day includes a hike back to Marampata and through the Apurimac Canyon, culminating at our campsite in Chiquisca, for an approximately 6-hour experience in warm weather and an overnight campsite. Night of camping in Chiquisca.

After breakfast, we’ll leave camp for a two- to three-hour climb to Chiquisca. We’ll then return to Capuliyoc, where we’ll enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll begin a two-hour return trip to Cachora, where our return transportation to Cusco awaits.

1. How many hours do you walk per day?

In general, you will walk between 6 and 8 hours per day, depending on the weather, the group’s pace, and the terrain. We organize the itinerary in a balanced way so you can enjoy the landscapes, archaeological sites, and planned rest stops. Our guides explain the most important points along the route and ensure that each section is completed safely. This trek is designed to offer a challenging yet deeply rewarding experience.

Throughout the four days, we use comfortable and well-located campsites along the route. Our logistics team sets up spacious, clean, and resistant tents, as well as a dining tent where you can enjoy your meals under shelter. We provide sleeping pads and secure areas to rest each night. We take care of every detail so that, despite the demanding nature of the trek, you enjoy a restorative rest and a pleasant overall experience.

We include mules that carry the camping equipment and part of your personal belongings. If you wish to bring more weight than the allowed limit, we can arrange additional mules for an extra cost. This allows you to walk more comfortably and focus on enjoying the scenery. Our team helps you coordinate the option that best fits your needs, always prioritizing your safety and well-being throughout the entire trek.

Yes, we recommend arriving in Cusco one or two days before the start of the tour to adapt to the altitude and reduce the risk of discomfort. During the briefing, we will give you useful tips such as staying hydrated, resting well, and maintaining proper nutrition. Our team is trained to assist you in case of altitude-related symptoms.
